Air Fryer vs Microwave: I’m Choosing Only One

In every modern kitchen, counter space is sacred. Between coffee machines, rice cookers, and the occasional blender that hasn’t seen use since last summer, it’s clear that not every appliance can, or should, stay. Recently, I found myself facing an unexpected dilemma: Should I keep the microwave, or the air fryer?

Yes, I’m well aware of how dramatic that sounds. But when you’re short on space and long on opinions about food texture and convenience, these decisions matter. I’ve been using both appliances for months now, and after a thorough comparison, it’s time to choose. One stays. The other gets packed away.

The Case for the Microwave: Fast, Reliable, and... Predictable

There’s no denying the microwave’s value. It’s fast, easy, and practically effortless. Whether I’m reheating leftovers, softening butter, or warming up a late-night mug of milk, it gets the job done within minutes, sometimes seconds.

Speed has always been the microwave’s strongest asset. And when I’m in a rush, nothing compares. Press a few buttons, wait a moment, and dinner is served. However, the trade-off for that convenience is often in quality. Reheated pizza becomes limp. French fries lose their crunch. Most foods come out with the same rubbery texture and lukewarm regret that’s become synonymous with microwave meals.

The microwave works, but it rarely delights.

The Air Fryer: A Slower, Crispier, More Rewarding Experience

When I first heard the buzz, I was skeptical. “Crispy food without oil” sounded like another trend promising too much and delivering too little. But once I tried it, I understood the hype.

The air fryer doesn’t just reheat food, it revives it. Leftover fries taste freshly made. Chicken nuggets regain their crunch. Even vegetables take on a golden, roasted finish that makes them infinitely more enjoyable. It may not be as fast as the microwave, but the results speak for themselves.

I’ll admit: the air fryer requires more effort. There’s preheating, setting a timer, and occasionally pausing to shake the basket. But rather than feeling like extra work, it feels more like intentional cooking. Still easy, just a little more involved.

Convenience vs. Satisfaction

The microwave is the epitome of convenience. If simplicity is your top priority, it’s hard to argue against it. There’s something comforting about tossing leftovers into a microwave and knowing they’ll be warm in under a minute.

But the air fryer offers something the microwave simply can’t: a genuinely satisfying texture. Foods are crispy, browned, and, dare I say,  enjoyable again. It doesn’t just reheat meals. It improves them.

That said, I wouldn’t call the air fryer difficult to use. Once you get the hang of it, the process becomes second nature. And with newer models including presets and smart functions, the learning curve is minimal.

Health and Versatility

From a health perspective, the air fryer also has an edge. Using little to no oil, it manages to mimic the taste and texture of deep-fried food with significantly fewer calories and less mess. It also happens to be far more versatile. I’ve used it to cook salmon, roast vegetables, reheat pastries, and even bake cookies.

By contrast, the microwave is limited. It’s excellent for reheating and defrosting, but that’s where its usefulness tends to end.

The Final Decision

So, if I can only keep one appliance on my kitchen counter, I’m choosing the air fryer.

This wasn’t an easy decision. The microwave has served me well for years, and there’s no denying how fast and convenient it is. But in the long run, the air fryer simply brings more value to my daily life. The meals taste better. The health benefits are real. And every time I bite into a perfectly crisped piece of food, I know I made the right choice.

The microwave, for now, is being retired to the cabinet above the fridge, the same place we send old appliances to fade into quiet obscurity.

What Would You Choose?

If you had to make the same decision, which appliance would stay on your counter? Are you Team Air Fryer or Team Microwave? I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve managed to find a way to make microwave pizza actually enjoyable.
