The boxes are in, the keys are yours, and the excitement is real, but now what? Moving into a new home is a milestone, but it can also be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. Before you get caught up in the fun of decorating and organizing, there are a few important (and practical) steps you should take to set the stage for a smooth, safe, and stress-free beginning.
Whether you’re moving into a rented apartment, your first home, or a new family space, here’s what to do first, ideally before you even unpack.
🔐 1. Change the Locks and Check Security

It might seem like a small detail, but changing the locks should be one of your very first tasks, especially if you’re moving into a previously owned or rented place. You never know how many spare keys might be out there.
While you're at it, test all windows and door locks, and take a walk around to see if any lights or alarms need updating. For apartments or condos, check intercom systems or building entry rules. Feeling secure in your home is essential, and it's easier to sort these things out before you’re too settled in.
⚡ 2. Set Up Utilities and Wi-Fi

Nothing feels more chaotic than realizing you have no electricity or Wi-Fi while surrounded by boxes. Double-check that your electricity, water, and gas accounts are set up in your name and ready to go. If you haven’t already arranged internet service, now’s the time, especially if you work from home or stream most of your entertainment.
Label your circuit breaker, test outlets and switches, and locate the water shut-off valve, these are all small steps that will save you time later, especially in emergencies.
🧽 3. Clean Before You Unpack

Even if the space looks clean, it’s always a good idea to give your new home a proper wipe-down before moving furniture in. Start with high-touch areas like door handles, light switches, shelves, kitchen surfaces, and the bathroom.
If you’re short on time, prioritize the essentials: clean the fridge before you load groceries, wipe kitchen cabinets before unpacking plates, and give the bathroom a once-over. A fresh, clean base makes everything feel more “yours”, and gives you peace of mind as you settle in.
Moving into a new place is exciting, but the first few days can set the tone for your entire stay. Focus on security, essentials, and cleanliness before diving into décor. Once those boxes are unpacked and your Wi-Fi’s humming, you’ll be ready to enjoy every corner of your new home, stress-free and fully settled.
